Words

So, it’s been a while since I posted anything on this blog.  To be honest, life has gotten in the way a bit, as life tends to do.  And of course, when I say life, I mean those parts of life that are required in order to exist within a society…work, bills, drama, and issues.  Those same parts of life, which we have at best some control over…but definitely not total control over.  Those same parts of life, in some cases, which at best have some control over us.  And somewhere along the way in the past few weeks, I read a post on Blogger Buzz (a blog for bloggers) about “how to make your blog more effective.”   (…which I find to be kind of an interesting topic, since there are many different types of blogs, for different purposes and reasons, with different agendas.  I’m not sure how a single blog post can cover such a widely-varying audience, but I digress…)  One of the points was, a blog author should plan to post on a regular cadence, such as every 3 days, in order not to lose readers.  Oops…I’ve failed.

BUT…I bristle at the use of the word “should” in many situations.  It’s a judgmental word.  It looks down at the reader or the listener.  Why should I post on a regular cadence?  What if I don’t?  Or what if I do?  In this case, I didn’t.  And Should’s cousins Could and Would aren’t too much better.  I don’t know if I could have written regularly over the past month.  Or even if I would have.  But again, I didn’t.

And that’s the thing I don’t like about should, could, and would, especially when in past tense.  They tend to trap us in the past.  I think in a lot of cases, too much time is spent in the worlds of the words should, could, and would.  “Maybe I should have done this”… or “I wish he would have that”… or “if only she could have done this.”  Those have a tendency to erode confidence and become trapped in a situation that is in the rear-view mirror.

The trick, of course, is to convert past to present.  To convert should to will.  If there was something that I should have done, next time I will do.  If there’s something I could have done, this time I can do.  To live in the today for the today, not mired in the depths of the should and coulds and woulds.

Because, life will get in the way.  Even if we wish if wouldn’t.  And even though we know it shouldn’t..........

And of course, when I say life, I mean those parts of life that are required in order to exist within a society…work, bills, drama, and issues.  Those same parts of life, which we have at best some control over…but definitely not total control over.  Those same parts of life, in some cases, which at best have some control over us.  Those things…those nouns.  Including the people and the places.  The nouns sometimes can get in the way.  Not only to we get stuck in the past tenses of the shoulds, coulds, and woulds, but we also get stuck on the nouns.  Why am I stuck here?  With this?  For who?  For what?

The trick here, in this case, is to convert over to the verbs.  The actions words.  I did learn something in grade school!  To do.  To be.  To act.  To live.  To go.  Let the verbs take you to the nouns, don’t let the nouns limit the potential verbs.

Convert the past to the present.  Make a “should” to a “will”.  Convert from nouns to verbs.  If we all just could..........

  1. Personally I think a blogger should post as often as they wish. If they want to post every three days, every week , every month, so on an so forth so be it. By the same token if a blogger posts one post every three days of ten posts every day or anything in between. It is the bloggers right to post as many post a day as they wish and post as often as they wish. Besides how often do their readers check the blogs anyway.

It's your blog do what you want to.

Then again this all goes back to the points you brought up in your first paragraph that are all good an valid.

  2. Agreed. It's your blog, and you should post if you want to. ;) "For who, for what?" I heard somewhere Ricky Watters has a blog titled just that. In any case, I agree with you.
